A walled harbour town & Britain's smallest city Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Pembrokeshire, at the south-west tip of Wales, is ringed by cliffs, beaches and islands full of seabirds. This route spends three nights in Tenby and three in St Davids. From Los Angeles you'll connect through a hub to Cardiff or London, then take the train west. Tenby is a seaside town in Pembrokeshire, on Carmarthen Bay. Its Welsh name means little fort of the fish.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Tenby: day one, train from Cardiff; day two, walls and the Tudor Merchant's House; day three, boat to Caldey Island. Then spend days four to six in St Davids: day four, bus to St Davids, then the cathedral; day five, coast path walk; day six, boat to Skomer or Ramsey.

Tenby has about five kilometres of sandy beaches and its thirteenth-century town walls, including the Five Arches gatehouse, still stand. Boats sail from the harbour to Caldey Island, where monks live in a monastery and make perfume and chocolate.

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the only national park in Britain designated mainly for its coast, and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs for about 300 kilometres around it. St Davids is the resting place of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, and is named after him.

Its cathedral sits in a hollow below the town, beside the ruins of the medieval Bishop's Palace. Offshore, Skomer Island is famous for its puffins, which nest there in spring and early summer. Ramsey Island, off St Davids, is a nature reserve run by the RSPB, with seals and seabirds. May to September is the season for island boats and coastal walks.

St Davids lies on the River Alun, and its Welsh name, Tyddewi, means David's house. Trains from Cardiff reach Tenby, and local buses follow the coast to St Davids.

Safety: Canada's advice for the United Kingdom is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates the United Kingdom Level 2 (9 Sep 2026).
