Medieval walls & a clifftop abbey Best season (general guide): Apr–Sep

Yorkshire, in northern England, has one of Europe's finest medieval cities and a moorland coast. This route spends three nights in York and three in Whitby. From Los Angeles you'll connect via London or Manchester, then take the train.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in York: day one, the city walls; day two, York Minster; day three, the Shambles and Jorvik. Then spend days four to six in Whitby: day four, train via Middlesbrough or the moors line; day five, abbey and the 199 steps; day six, moors walk.

Much of the medieval city wall survives, and walking on top is a good way to see the city. The Shambles is a narrow street of overhanging timber-framed buildings. The Jorvik Viking Centre recalls the time when the city was a Viking settlement. Whitby, on the coast, is a fishing town split by a river mouth. On the east cliff stand the ruins of Whitby Abbey, reached by a famous flight of steps.

Bram Stoker set part of his novel Dracula in Whitby. The North York Moors Railway, a heritage line, runs steam trains across the moors behind the town. April to September is the most pleasant season. York was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD, and later became the Viking city of Jórvík.

The National Railway Museum, in York, is free to enter and holds famous locomotives including the Mallard, the world's fastest steam locomotive. Captain James Cook trained as a seaman in Whitby, and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum is in the house where he lodged. Fish and chips by the harbour is the classic Whitby meal. York's Shambles was once a street of butchers' shops.

Safety: Canada's advice for the United Kingdom is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates the United Kingdom Level 2 (9 Sep 2026).
