Alpine city & mountain valley Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep (hiking), Dec–Mar (skiing)

Tyrol, in western Austria, is a region of high mountains, deep valleys and old towns. This route spends three nights in Innsbruck and three in the Zillertal. From Manila you'll connect through the Gulf or a European hub to Innsbruck or Munich.

Innsbruck sits in a valley ringed by peaks. Its old town has painted houses and the Golden Roof, a balcony covered in gilded tiles built for an emperor. The Hofburg, an imperial palace, is nearby.

A funicular with stations designed by Zaha Hadid, the Hungerburgbahn, links the city centre with the Nordkette cable car, which climbs to high viewpoints over the city in minutes.

Ambras Castle, above the city, holds Renaissance collections. Swarovski Crystal Worlds, east of Innsbruck, is a museum and garden of crystal art.

The Zillertal is a long valley branching into side valleys and glaciers. In summer, lifts carry hikers to high trails and mountain huts, and in winter the valley is a ski area. A narrow-gauge railway runs along the valley floor.

June to September is the hiking season, and December to March the ski season.

Good to know: Local trains and buses reach most places, and some hotels include guest cards for lifts and transport. Mountain weather changes fast, so carry layers and check forecasts before hikes.

Innsbruck's old town is small, so one morning covers the main sights. Spend an afternoon high on the Nordkette, where trails lead along the ridge. In the Zillertal, pick one valley village as a base to save time packing. Many huts close outside the main hiking and ski seasons, so check opening dates before you set out.

Huts in the mountains serve simple Tyrolean food such as dumplings and cheese noodles.
