Whales & dolphins NZ Best season (general guide): Year-round (sperm whales); train Oct–Apr

Kaikōura is one of the few places in the world where sperm whales can be seen close to the coast throughout the year, because a deep submarine canyon lies just offshore. This short route combines it with Christchurch. From Melbourne it's a flight across the Tasman to Christchurch, and Kaikōura is a scenic drive or train ride up the coast.

Christchurch has rebuilt much of its centre since the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, and the Botanic Gardens, punting on the Avon and the Canterbury Museum make for a relaxed first day. The coastal road and the Coastal Pacific train both follow the shoreline north to Kaikōura, with the Seaward Kaikōura Range rising behind the town. Whale Watch Kaikōura's boats go out to look for sperm whales, and dusky dolphins, fur seals and albatrosses are other regular sights. There are also coastal walks on the peninsula and seafood shacks selling crayfish.

Sperm whale tours run all year, though the sea can cancel trips, so allow a spare day. The Coastal Pacific train is a seasonal service, running from about October to April.

Book whale tours ahead and be ready for seasickness on the open sea. Respect the closures that protect dolphins during their midday rest periods in summer.

How to pace it: two nights in Christchurch give you a day for the gardens, the museum and the city centre. The journey up the coast to Kaikōura takes a few hours, by car or on the seasonal Coastal Pacific train. Three nights in Kaikōura are worth the time because the whale tours can be cancelled if the sea is rough, and an extra morning gives you a second chance. On the other days, walk the peninsula track, look for fur seals at the point and eat seafood by the shore. Return to Christchurch for your flight back; the last day's travel allows for the drive.
