Hippos in an estuary town & a wetland park of lakes and dunes Best season (general guide): Apr–Oct

North-east KwaZulu-Natal, near the border with Mozambique, combines a wetland park on the sea with one of Africa's oldest game reserves. This route spends three nights in St Lucia and three in iSimangaliso. From Melbourne you'll connect through Johannesburg to Durban, then drive north. iSimangaliso Wetland Park is on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal, about 235 kilometres north of Durban by road.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal: day one, drive from Durban; day two, estuary boat for hippos; day three, Hluhluwe–Imfolozi game drive. Then spend days four to six in iSimangaliso: day four, Cape Vidal and the eastern shores; day five, Sodwana Bay reefs; day six, lake walk.

iSimangaliso is South Africa's third-largest protected area, covering 280 kilometres of coastline from the Mozambican border to south of the Lake St Lucia estuary. It is a UNESCO site. It was formerly called the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. St Lucia is a small town that is mainly a base for the park. Boat trips on the estuary pass hippos and crocodiles, and hippos sometimes walk through the town at night.

Cape Vidal, on the eastern shores, has forested dunes and a sheltered beach. Sodwana Bay, further north, has the southernmost coral reefs in Africa and is popular for diving. Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park, inland, is known for its role in saving the white rhinoceros from extinction. The cooler, drier months from April to October are best for game viewing.

The park was renamed iSimangaliso on 1 November 2007; the Zulu name means miracle or wonder. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on its northern beaches in summer. St Lucia lies in the Umkhanyakude District Municipality.

The park was South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1999.

Safety: Canada asks travellers in South Africa to exercise a high degree of caution, mainly because of crime (28 Sep 2026). The US rates South Africa Level 2 (27 May 2025).
