Colonial forts & a rainforest Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr

Puerto Rico, a US territory in the Caribbean, combines a Spanish colonial capital with rainforest and beaches. This route spends four nights in Old San Juan and two near El Yunque. From Melbourne you'll connect via a US hub to San Juan.

How to pace it: San Juan was founded by the Spanish in the early sixteenth century, and Old San Juan, with its bluish cobbles and colourful houses, is the oldest settlement on the island. Walk it on arrival and see the cathedral with the tomb of Juan Ponce de León. Day two is for Castillo San Felipe del Morro on the headland, and day three for Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest fortification the Spanish built in the New World; both are part of the San Juan National Historic Site, listed by UNESCO in 1983 with La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas. Keep day four for the beach, and try mofongo, mashed plantain with garlic, and the piña colada, said to have been created in San Juan.

On day five, drive east to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system. Trails lead to waterfalls such as La Mina Falls, one of the most visited, and at night the tiny coquí frogs, a national symbol named after their two-note call, start to sing. On day six, combine the trails with Luquillo beach and its food kiosks.

Practical notes: December to April is the drier season; hurricane season runs from June to November. You'll want a car for El Yunque.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Puerto Rico to take normal security precautions (updated 8 Sep 2026); as a US territory, it has no State Department advisory.
