Seafood city, granite islands & rock carvings Best season (general guide): Jun–Aug

West Sweden is a coast of smooth granite islands, red fishing huts and some of the country's best seafood. This route spends three nights in Gothenburg and three along the Bohuslän coast. From Mexico City you'll connect through a European hub to Gothenburg.

Haga is an old district of wooden houses and cafés, and Feskekôrka, a fish market shaped like a church, sells the catch of the day.

Trams and boats reach the southern archipelago, where several islands are car-free and easy to walk.

North of the city, Bohuslän is a coast of bare granite and small harbours. Marstrand is an island town below Carlsten Fortress, and Smögen is known for its long wooden boardwalk along the harbour.

Near Tanum, UNESCO lists rock carvings from the Bronze Age, showing ships, people and animals cut into flat rocks.

June to August is the warmest season and the best for the coast.

Good to know: A car is easiest on the coast, though buses reach main towns. Seafood, from shrimp to oysters, is the reason many Swedes come here; order it fresh at harbour restaurants.

Gothenburg is easy to explore by tram, and day tickets make trips to the archipelago simple. On the coast, spend one day simply walking on the smooth rocks above the water and swimming from them. Marstrand is reached by a short ferry from the mainland. At Tanum, a visitor centre explains the carvings, and some are painted so they are easier to see. Allow time for a long seafood lunch in Smögen, then walk the harbour as the boats return in the evening.

Summer in Sweden is busy, especially in July, so book coastal rooms early.

Safety: Canada's advice for Sweden is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 11 August 2026).
