A chic village resort & an off-grid cape of sea lions Best season (general guide): Dec–Mar

Uruguay's Atlantic coast is the summer playground of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, yet it still has quiet villages and wild capes. This route spends three nights in José Ignacio and three at Cabo Polonio. From Mexico City you'll connect to Punta del Este, or to Montevideo and drive east.

How to pace it: José Ignacio, a village turned fashionable summer resort, has a nineteenth-century lighthouse between two beaches that you can climb on day two. On day three, drive to Punta del Este, on the peninsula where the Río de la Plata meets the Atlantic, to see Los Dedos, the sculpture of fingers rising from the sand, and Casapueblo, the white headland home and studio of the artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Isla de Lobos, offshore, has one of the region's largest sea lion colonies.

On day four, drive north-east to the Cabo Polonio park gate. The hamlet has no road in: you leave the car at the entrance and cross the dunes in large trucks. Cabo Polonio, a national park since 2009, had 128 residents in 2023, and its houses have little or no mains electricity, many lit by candles or solar power. Spend day five with the sea lions and fur seals on the rocks by the 1881 lighthouse, and day six walking the beach; the name is said to come from a ship, the Polonio, wrecked off the cape in the eighteenth century.

Practical notes: summer, from December to March, is the main season, when thousands of visitors arrive, so book early. Bring cash and a torch to Cabo Polonio. La Paloma and Punta del Diablo, two other beach towns on the Rocha coast, are easy add-ons.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Uruguay to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Uruguay Level 2 (28 Jul 2026).
