Icebergs, whales & fjords Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Newfoundland is Canada's easternmost province, an island of rugged coastline, colourful fishing towns and friendly locals. This route spends three nights in St. John's and three in Gros Morne National Park. From Mexico City you'll connect through Toronto or Montreal.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in St. John's: day one, Water Street and Jellybean Row; day two, Signal Hill and Cape Spear; day three, boat trip for whales or icebergs. Then spend days four to six in Gros Morne: day four, fly to Deer Lake, then drive to Gros Morne; day five, Western Brook Pond boat tour; day six, Tablelands and Bonne Bay.

St. John's is known for its brightly painted row houses, nicknamed Jellybean Row. Signal Hill, above the harbour, has views over the city and the Atlantic. Cape Spear, a short drive away, is the easternmost point of North America, with a historic lighthouse.

Boat trips from nearby harbours look for whales in summer. By late winter, icebergs drift down from the Arctic along the coast known as Iceberg Alley.

A short flight crosses the island to Deer Lake, the gateway to Gros Morne, which UNESCO lists for its geology. The Tablelands are a barren landscape of rock from the Earth's mantle, pushed to the surface. Western Brook Pond is a long, deep lake between cliffs, seen on a boat tour.

June to September is the best time, with whales in summer and the warmest weather. Icebergs are usually best in spring and early summer.

George Street in St. John's is known for its pubs and live music, a good way to experience local hospitality. On the west coast, fishing villages such as Rocky Harbour and Woody Point make comfortable bases, with seafood restaurants and boat trips.

Good to know: Hire a car in Deer Lake, as there is little public transport in the park. The Western Brook Pond boat trip requires a walk to the dock, so allow time. Weather can change quickly, so pack layers.

Allow a spare day for fog or wind delays.

John's, fly on to Deer Lake, go on to Gros Morne overland, and return overland to Deer Lake for the flight home.
