Colonial city, páramo lakes & Inca ruins Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Cuenca, in Ecuador's southern Andes, is a calm colonial city with mountain parks and Inca ruins nearby. This route spends four nights in Cuenca and two exploring Cajas and Ingapirca. From Miami you'll connect via Quito or Guayaquil. UNESCO lists Cuenca's historic centre. The New Cathedral's blue domes dominate the skyline. The so-called Panama hat is actually made in Ecuador, and Cuenca has workshops where you can watch them woven.

Cajas National Park, west of the city, is a high páramo landscape of lakes. Ingapirca, north of Cuenca, is Ecuador's largest Inca site. June to September is the drier season.

Pacing: Cuenca is at altitude, so rest on your first day.

Cuenca's centre is easy to walk, with flower markets, churches and riverside paths along the Tomebamba. Many restaurants serve local dishes such as mote pillo. The Pumapungo museum has archaeological ruins in its grounds and exhibits on Ecuador's cultures. Cajas is cold and wet, so bring warm clothes, waterproofs and good boots. Trails around the lakes are at high altitude, so walk slowly. Ingapirca is a long day trip by road from Cuenca, best with a driver or tour. Sundays are quiet, with many shops closed. Use registered taxis, and keep valuables close in markets. At this height, UV is intense even under cloud, so wear a hat and sunglasses.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Ecuador because of crime; its avoid-all areas are near the Colombian and Peruvian borders, far from this route (advisory updated 9 Oct 2026). The US rates Ecuador Level 2 (issued 18 Aug 2026).

Getting there and around: fly into Cuenca, go on to Cajas and Ingapirca overland, and return overland to Cuenca for the flight home.

Leave a quiet last morning for the markets or a river walk before you fly home.
