Rock art, crocodiles & waterfalls Best season (general guide): May–Sep

The Top End of Australia's Northern Territory is a tropical region of wetlands, waterfalls and some of the oldest rock art in the world. This route spends six nights between Darwin, Kakadu and Litchfield. From Miami you'll connect through a US hub and Sydney or Singapore.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Darwin: day one, the waterfront; day two, Mindil Beach market. Then spend days three to five in Kakadu: day three, drive to Kakadu; day four, Ubirr and Nourlangie rock art; day five, Yellow Water cruise. Then spend day six in Litchfield: Litchfield waterfalls.

Darwin is a relaxed tropical city.

Kakadu National Park, east of Darwin, is listed by UNESCO for both its natural and cultural values. Rock art galleries at Ubirr and Nourlangie record thousands of years of Aboriginal history. The park is managed together with its traditional owners. A cruise on Yellow Water Billabong shows birds and saltwater crocodiles.

Litchfield National Park, on the way back to Darwin, has waterfalls and swimming holes surrounded by rainforest, and fields of tall termite mounds.

Darwin has a growing food scene, influenced by Asia, and markets sell laksa, satay and tropical fruit. In Kakadu, ranger talks explain the rock art and the six seasons recognised by the traditional owners. Cultural tours run by Aboriginal guides offer deeper insight. The drive between the parks crosses wide floodplains and savannah woodland, where birds and wallabies are common.

Practical notes: In the dry season, the Mindil Beach Sunset Market draws crowds with food stalls and sunset views. The best time to go is the dry season, May to September, according to Parks Australia's seasons page. Many roads and sites close in the wet season. In the Top End, a hire car is the best way to get around. Book Yellow Water cruises a day or two ahead in the dry season.

Safety: saltwater crocodiles live in rivers and billabongs, so swim only where signs say it is safe.

Fill up with fuel whenever you can, and carry water and insect repellent on every walk.
