Moscow to Palawan: Puerto Princesa and Port Barton
Moscow → Puerto Princesa → Port Barton
Underground river & a quiet island bay Best season (general guide): Dec–May
Palawan, in the west of the Philippines, is a long island of limestone, forest and clear water. This route spends three nights in Puerto Princesa and three in Port Barton. From Moscow you'll connect through Asia to Manila, then fly to Puerto Princesa.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Puerto Princesa: day one, arrive and settle in; day two, underground river; day three, Honda Bay islands. Then spend days four to six in Port Barton: day four, road to Port Barton; day five, island hopping; day six, beach day.
The Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River, listed by UNESCO, flows through a cave beneath limestone mountains before reaching the sea. Boats take visitors into the cave.
Honda Bay, near the city, has small islands and sandbars for swimming.
Port Barton, north of the city, is a quiet village on a bay, with island-hopping trips to beaches and reefs.
The route keeps to the island's calmer corners rather than its busiest resorts.
December to May is the dry season.
Good to know: Permits for the underground river are limited, so book ahead. Roads to Port Barton are slow.
Puerto Princesa is a clean, orderly city, with seafood restaurants by the bay and a relaxed night market. The underground river trip includes a boat ride from the jetty and an audio guide inside the cave. Port Barton has limited electricity and mobile signal in some places, so bring a power bank and cash. Island trips include snorkelling stops, and some boats visit spots where sea turtles feed. Wear reef-safe sunscreen and don't touch the coral. Evenings are quiet, with dinner on the sand and early nights. The road between the two can be slow, so travel in daylight. Allow a day of buffer before your flight out, as weather can delay boats.
Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in the Philippines; its avoid-all and avoid-non-essential areas are in Mindanao and the Sulu Sea, not Palawan (advisory updated 7 Jul 2026). The US rates the Philippines Level 2 (issued 1 Sep 2026).
