A seaside capital & Roman ruins Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Sep–Nov

Morocco's north has imperial cities and Roman ruins, quieter than Marrakech. This route spends three nights in Rabat and three in Meknès. From Moscow you'll connect via Istanbul or Casablanca to Rabat. Rabat, the capital, is listed by UNESCO for its modern and historic city. The Kasbah of the Udayas, with blue and white streets, overlooks the river mouth. The Hassan Tower is the minaret of an unfinished mosque.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Rabat: day one, kasbah of the Udayas; day two, Hassan Tower; day three, medina and the coast. Then spend days four to six in Meknès: day four, train to Meknès, then Bab Mansour; day five, Volubilis; day six, Moulay Idriss.

Meknès was an imperial capital under Moulay Ismail. Bab Mansour, a great gate, faces the main square, and the medina is listed by UNESCO. Volubilis, nearby, is a Roman town with mosaics, listed by UNESCO. Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, a holy town on a hill, overlooks the ruins. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Good to know: Trains link Rabat and Meknès, and taxis reach Volubilis. Dress modestly.

Rabat is calm compared to other Moroccan cities, with a walkable medina and a tram network. Trains to Meknès take a couple of hours. Volubilis is exposed, with little shade, so visit early or late in hot weather and bring water. A guide helps bring the ruins to life. Moulay Idriss is a pilgrimage town, so dress modestly and be respectful. In the medinas, agree on a price before accepting help from unofficial guides. Bargain politely in the souks.

Rabat and Meknès are a long way from the Algerian border and Western Sahara zones on Canada's avoid-all list. Its Morocco page, last updated 26 May 2026, asks for a high degree of caution countrywide because of terrorism, and the US level is 2 (issued 4 Sep 2026). Rabat's beaches and seafront are good for a sunset walk, while Meknès's main square fills with food stalls and performers in the evening. Carry small change for taxis.
