A lakeside castle & a cheese-making hill town Best season (general guide): May–Sep

The north shore of Lake Geneva has been a resort for two centuries, and just inland lies the town that gave its name to one of Switzerland's best-known cheeses. This route spends three nights in Montreux and three in Gruyères. From Mumbai you'll fly to Geneva, then take the train along the lake. Montreux is a town on the shore of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps, in the canton of Vaud. It has been an important tourist destination since the nineteenth century because of its mild climate.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Montreux: day one, train from Geneva; day two, Chillon Castle; day three, Lavaux vineyards. Then spend days four to six in Gruyères: day four, train to Gruyères; day five, castle and the cheese dairy; day six, walk in the pre-Alps.

Chillon Castle stands on a rock in the lake just south of the town and is one of the most visited historic buildings in Switzerland. The Montreux Jazz Festival, founded in 1967, is held every summer. West of the town, the Lavaux vineyard terraces climb the slopes above the lake and are listed by UNESCO.

Gruyères is a medieval town in the canton of Fribourg, set on an 82-metre hill overlooking the Saane valley. It gives its name to Gruyère cheese. The town's castle is open to visitors, and a museum dedicated to H. R. Giger, the artist behind the creature in the film Alien, is also here. May to September is the best season for lake steamers and mountain walks.

Montreux has nearly 27,000 people, and the area is known as the Vaud or Swiss Riviera. A statue of Freddie Mercury stands on the lakefront; Queen recorded at a studio in Montreux. Gruyères is in the district of Gruyère in the canton of Fribourg. Lake Geneva steamers, some of them paddle steamers built in the early twentieth century, call at Montreux. Fondue made with Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois is the classic dish of the area.
