Pitons, rainforest & Caribbean beaches Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr

Saint Lucia is a mountainous island in the eastern Caribbean, best known for the Pitons, two volcanic spires rising from the sea. This route spends two nights in the north and four in Soufrière. Long-haul flights usually land at Hewanorra, in the south, while George F. L. Charles airport near Castries mostly handles regional flights; check which airport suits your plan.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Castries (Saint Lucia): day one, Castries market; day two, Pigeon Island and Rodney Bay. Then spend days three to six in Soufrière: day three, travel south via Marigot Bay; day four, Sulphur Springs and Diamond Falls; day five, Gros Piton hike; day six, snorkelling below the Pitons.

Castries, the capital, has a busy central market. North of the city, Rodney Bay has beaches and restaurants, and Pigeon Island, now linked to the mainland, has the ruins of a British fort with views along the coast.

The road south passes Marigot Bay, a sheltered inlet surrounded by hills. Soufrière, the island's old French capital, sits below the Pitons. The Pitons Management Area is listed by UNESCO for its volcanic landscape and reefs.

Sulphur Springs, near Soufrière, is a volcanic area with steaming vents and mud baths. The Diamond Botanical Gardens have a waterfall coloured by minerals. Gros Piton can be climbed with a local guide, and the reefs below the Pitons are good for snorkelling.

December to April is the dry season and the best time. The hurricane season runs from June to November.

Friday nights in Gros Islet, near Rodney Bay, bring a street party with grilled fish and music. In Soufrière, local guides and boat taxis offer trips along the coast. Creole food, with fresh fish, plantains and spices, is served in small restaurants across the island.

Good to know: Roads are winding and steep, so travel between Castries and Soufrière takes time. Taxis and water taxis are common. Start the Gros Piton hike early to avoid the heat.

Bring water shoes for the rocky beaches.
