A palace city & misty coffee hills Best season (general guide): Oct–Mar

Southern Karnataka offers a royal city of palaces and markets and, a few hours west, cool hills covered in coffee and spice plantations. This route spends three nights in Mysore and three in Coorg. From New York you'll connect through a hub to Bengaluru, then drive. Mysore, officially Mysuru, is a city in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Mysore: day one, drive from Bengaluru; day two, the palace by day and at night; day three, Chamundi Hill and the market. Then spend days four to six in Coorg: day four, road to Madikeri; day five, coffee estate walk; day six, Abbey Falls and Bylakuppe.

The Mysore Palace, rebuilt in the early twentieth century, is lit by thousands of bulbs on Sunday evenings and during festivals. The Mysore Dasara, held in September or October, is the state festival, with a procession of decorated elephants.

Chamundi Hill, above the city, has a temple to the goddess Chamundeshwari and a giant stone statue of Nandi the bull. Mysore silk and sandalwood products are traditional crafts of the region, and Mysore pak, a rich sweet, takes its name from the city. Kodagu, also known by its former name Coorg, is a district of Karnataka. Before 1956 it was a separate state.

It is one of India's main coffee-growing regions, and plantation stays let visitors walk among the coffee bushes. The Kodava people of the district have their own language, customs and dress. Abbey Falls is a waterfall near Madikeri, the district's main town. Bylakuppe, on the way, is home to Tibetan refugee settlements and the large Namdroling Monastery.

The cooler, drier months from October to March are the most comfortable; the monsoon is very wet in Coorg.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in India and to avoid travel to Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and the Pakistan border areas (advisory updated 13 Jul 2026). The US rates India Level 2 (16 Jun 2025). Karnataka is far from those areas.
