Florianópolis, the capital of the southern state of Santa Catarina, sits mostly on an island with dozens of beaches. Further south, Praia do Rosa is a surf bay where whales visit in winter. This route spends four nights in Florianópolis and two in Praia do Rosa. From Paris you'll connect through São Paulo or Lisbon.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Florianópolis: day one, Hercílio Luz Bridge; day two, Lagoa da Conceição; day three, Santo Antônio de Lisboa; day four, beach day. Then spend days five and six in Praia do Rosa: day five, drive south to Praia do Rosa; day six, coastal walk and whale watching.

The Hercílio Luz Bridge, a suspension bridge, links the island to the mainland. Lagoa da Conceição, in the middle of the island, is a lagoon with restaurants, dunes and water sports. Settlers from the Azores founded fishing villages such as Santo Antônio de Lisboa, where oysters are farmed and served along the waterfront. Beaches range from busy ones in the north to quieter ones in the south and east.

Praia do Rosa is a wide bay with dunes and lagoons. Southern right whales come to this coast in winter to breed, and they can sometimes be seen from shore. December to March is beach season, and July to October is the whale season. Florianópolis has beaches for every mood, from surf breaks to quiet coves, so try a different one each day. At Praia do Rosa, walk the coastal path between the dunes and lagoons. Fresh oysters are a local speciality around the island. Bring binoculars in winter for the whales, and a warm layer for cool evenings.

Good to know: A car helps for exploring the island and the drive south. Summer weekends are very busy with domestic tourists, so book ahead.

Surf schools on both coasts offer lessons for beginners, and the calmer bays suit children and swimmers who prefer gentle water. Mornings are quietest on the beaches.
