Boat-roofed houses & highland rice terraces Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Sulawesi, in central Indonesia, has some of the country's most distinctive cultures. This route spends one night in Makassar and five in Tana Toraja. From Paris you'll connect via Jakarta or another hub to Makassar. Makassar is a busy port. Fort Rotterdam, built by the Dutch, stands near the waterfront, and Losari Beach is a promenade where people gather at sunset.

How to pace it: Spend day one in Makassar: Fort Rotterdam and Losari. Then spend days two to six in Tana Toraja: day two, drive north to Rantepao; day three, tongkonan villages; day four, cliff graves at Lemo; day five, rice terraces walk; day six, market day.

Pinisi, traditional wooden sailing ships, are built in southern Sulawesi. Tana Toraja, in the highlands to the north, is home to the Toraja people. Their tongkonan houses have roofs shaped like boats or buffalo horns. Funeral ceremonies are central to Toraja culture and can last for days; visitors may be welcomed if they show respect. At Lemo, graves are cut into cliffs, watched over by wooden effigies called tau tau.

Rantepao is the main town, surrounded by rice terraces and villages. June to September is the drier season.

Good to know: The road to Toraja is long, so break it with stops. A local guide helps you understand customs and find ceremonies.

The drive to Toraja takes many hours, so some travellers prefer the short flight to the small airport nearer Rantepao when it operates. Highland nights are cooler than the coast, so bring a light jacket. If invited to a ceremony, bring a small gift, such as sugar or cigarettes, as local guides advise, and follow their lead on dress and behaviour.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Indonesia; its avoid-non-essential area is Indonesian Papua, far from Sulawesi (advisory updated 10 Sep 2026). The US rates Indonesia Level 2 (issued 7 Jul 2026).

Makassar's seafood stalls along the waterfront are a lively place for a first evening meal.
