A blue-and-white cliff village & North Africa's holy city Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Oct–Nov

Northern Tunisia combines Roman and Punic ruins, a picture-postcard village on the sea and one of Islam's holiest cities. This route spends four nights in Sidi Bou Said and two in Kairouan. From Paris you'll fly to Tunis. Sidi Bou Said is a town about 20 kilometres north-east of Tunis, celebrated for its blue-and-white architecture.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Sidi Bou Said: day one, the village; day two, Carthage ruins; day three, Tunis medina; day four, Bardo Museum. Then spend days five and six in Kairouan: day five, road south to Kairouan; day six, Great Mosque and the medina.

The TGM light railway runs from Tunis to La Marsa and stops at the village. Carthage, the great Phoenician and later Roman city, lies just along the coast and is also a UNESCO site.

Kairouan, the capital of its governorate, was founded by the Umayyads around 670 and became an important centre of Islamic scholarship.

Spring and autumn are warm without the heat of summer. The Café des Nattes, on the village's main stairway, is one of its best-known cafés. Kairouan is considered the fourth holiest city in Islam by some.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Tunisia. It advises avoiding all travel within 20 km of the Algerian border, within 30 km of the Libyan border, in Kasserine governorate, including the Chaambi, Mghila, Sammama and Selloum mountains, and in the military zone south of Remada, and non-essential travel to the Delegation of Remada and Mount Orbata (advisory updated 26 May 2026). The US rates Tunisia Level 2 (21 May 2026).

Getting there and around: fly into Tunis, go on to Sidi Bou Said overland, go on to Kairouan by road, and return by road to Tunis for the flight home.

Sidi Bou Said and Kairouan are far from those areas.
