Mexican culture & food Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr (Día de Muertos late Oct–2 Nov)

Mexico City and Oaxaca are two of the best places in the country to understand its history and its cuisine, and this route gives each one several days. From Rome you'll fly to Mexico City, often with a connection in Europe. Oaxaca is a short domestic flight further south.

Mexico City's historic centre and Xochimilco are listed together by UNESCO. Around the Zócalo you can visit the cathedral and the excavated Templo Mayor, and the National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park is one of the finest museums in the Americas. Neighbourhoods such as Roma and Condesa are good for food, and boats called trajineras glide along Xochimilco's canals. Oaxaca is calmer, with markets full of chocolate, chillies and textiles, and a historic centre listed by UNESCO together with Monte Albán, the ancient Zapotec city on a hilltop nearby. Day trips go to craft villages and mezcal producers in the valleys.

The dry season from about November to April is the best time for both cities. Oaxaca's celebrations of the Día de Muertos run from late October to 2 November and draw big crowds, so book far in advance if you want to join them.

Mexico City is at high altitude, so take it easy for the first day. Practical notes: use authorised taxis or ride apps, and check current local advice for any area you plan to visit.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Mexico City: day one, Zócalo and Templo Mayor; day two, National Museum of Anthropology; day three, Roma and Condesa food; day four, Xochimilco. Then spend days five to eight in Oaxaca: day five, fly to Oaxaca, then markets; day six, Monte Albán; day seven, craft villages; day eight, mezcal producers in the valley.

Safety note: the US State Department (advisory of 29 May 2026) rates Mexico City and Oaxaca state at Level 2, exercise increased caution. It places no restrictions on Oaxaca City or Monte Albán, but advises against the Isthmus region and Highway 200 near the Guerrero border.

This route stays in those unrestricted areas. Check current advice before you travel.
