Coffee highlands & Caribbean islands Best season (general guide): Jan–Apr

Western Panama has cool coffee highlands on one side of the mountains and Caribbean islands on the other. This route spends three nights in Boquete and three in Bocas del Toro. From San Francisco you'll connect via Panama City to David. Boquete is a mountain town known for coffee, including the prized Geisha variety. Farms offer tours and tastings.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Boquete: day one, road to Boquete; day two, coffee farm tour; day three, hike near Volcán Barú. Then spend days four to six in Bocas del Toro: day four, road and boat to Bocas; day five, Bastimentos marine park; day six, beach day.

Volcán Barú, the highest point in Panama, rises above the town. Trails around Boquete pass forest and streams. Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on the Caribbean coast. Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park protects reefs, mangroves and beaches. January to April is the dry season in the highlands.

Good to know: The drive over the mountains takes several hours.

Boquete is cool and green, with gardens, cafés and a small town square. Coffee tours show how beans are grown and processed, and tastings explain the flavours. The Lost Waterfalls trail and the Pipeline Trail are popular walks near the town. Climbing Volcán Barú is a long, steep hike, usually begun at night to reach the summit for sunrise. Bocas del Toro town, on Isla Colón, is lively, with water taxis to the other islands. Snorkelling trips visit reefs, mangroves and a starfish beach. Bring cash for water taxis and small businesses. Rain is common in Bocas at any time of year, but often passes quickly. Reef-safe sunscreen helps protect the coral.

Canada advises normal precautions in Panama (advisory updated 9 Oct 2026); its avoid-all areas, in Darién and the Mosquito Gulf, are off this route. The US rates Panama Level 2 (issued 19 Aug 2026).

Allow a night in David if your flight lands late, and travel over the mountains in daylight.
