The cradle of Portugal & a city of churches and stairways Best season (general guide): Apr–Oct

Northern Portugal's Minho region is green, devout and full of history, and its two main towns sit only half an hour apart. This route spends three nights in Guimarães and three in Braga. From São Paulo you'll fly to Porto, then continue by train or bus. Guimarães is often called the birthplace of Portugal, because Afonso Henriques, the first king, is traditionally said to have been born here.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Guimarães: day one, train from Porto; day two, castle and the Dukes' palace; day three, cable car to Penha. Then spend days four to six in Braga: day four, bus to Braga, then the cathedral; day five, Bom Jesus do Monte; day six, day trip to Peneda-Gerês.

Guimarães's historic centre has been on the UNESCO list since 2001 as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a medieval settlement growing into a modern town. The listing was extended in 2023 to the Couros zone, the old tanning quarter.

The Nicolinas, the city's main festivities, are held by students in late November and early December. A cable car climbs from the town to Penha, a wooded hill with a sanctuary and views over the valley. Braga is the capital of its district and of the historical Minho province. Its urban area is the third most populous in Portugal, after Lisbon and Porto.

On a hill outside the city, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte is reached by a monumental baroque stairway or by a water-powered funicular from the nineteenth century.

Braga's churches and religious processions are at their busiest during Holy Week. To the north-east, Peneda-Gerês is Portugal's only national park, with granite mountains, villages and rivers. Spring to early autumn is the best season, while winters in the Minho are mild and wet. The Minho is the home of vinho verde, a light, young wine that is often slightly sparkling.

Safety: Canada's advice for Portugal is to take normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Portugal Level 1 (23 Dec 2025).
