Blue Ridge drives, mountain music & old-growth forest Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

The Southern Appalachians, where North Carolina meets Tennessee, are among the oldest mountains on Earth, with long ridges, deep forest and a rich tradition of mountain music. This route spends three nights in Asheville and three by the Great Smoky Mountains. From Seoul you'll connect through a US hub such as Atlanta or Charlotte.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Asheville: day one, downtown and the River Arts District; day two, Biltmore Estate; day three, drive a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then spend days four to six in the Great Smoky Mountains: day four, over the mountains to Gatlinburg; day five, Clingmans Dome and a ridge walk; day six, Cades Cove loop.

Asheville is a lively small city in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its River Arts District is full of studios in old industrial buildings, and live music fills bars and street corners in the evening.

The Biltmore Estate, built for George Vanderbilt in the 1890s, is often called the largest privately owned house in the United States, set in gardens and woodland.

The Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic road along the crest of the mountains, runs past Asheville, with overlooks and short trails.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, listed by UNESCO, protects some of the largest stands of old-growth forest in the eastern US and a great diversity of plants and animals. Clingmans Dome, the highest point in Tennessee, has a tower above the treetops. Cades Cove, a broad valley with old churches and log cabins, is good for spotting deer and black bears. In early summer, some areas are known for synchronous fireflies that flash together.

Spring wildflowers and autumn colour make April to June and September to October the best seasons.

Good to know: A car is essential. Autumn weekends are very busy in the park, so start early. Keep your distance from bears and never feed them. Check the park website for road closures and any parking rules before you go.

Bring layers, as the ridges are cooler than the valleys.
