Victoria Falls & elephant herds Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Victoria Falls and the Chobe river are only a short drive apart, but cross from Zambia into Botswana. This route spends three nights in Livingstone and three at Chobe. From Seoul you'll connect via Johannesburg to Livingstone, and leave from Kasane. Victoria Falls, called Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, is one of the largest waterfalls in the world. UNESCO lists it as shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Livingstone: day one, the falls; day two, Mosi-oa-Tunya park; day three, Zambezi sunset cruise. Then spend days four to six in Chobe: day four, cross the Kazungula Bridge to Kasane; day five, Chobe river cruise; day six, game drive.

Trails on the Zambian side lead along the edge of the gorge, with spray drenching visitors when the river is high. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, upstream, has rhino and other wildlife, and boats cruise the Zambezi at sunset. The Kazungula Bridge crosses the river into Botswana. Chobe National Park, beside Kasane, is known for its large herds of elephants.

Boat cruises on the Chobe river bring visitors close to elephants, hippos and crocodiles.

Practical notes: May to October is the dry season; the falls are fullest earlier in the year. Devil's Pool, at the edge of the falls on Livingstone Island, can be visited in the dry season.

Safety: Canada advises normal security precautions in Zambia, with regional advisories for border areas elsewhere (updated 9 Sep 2026), and a high degree of caution in Botswana (updated 26 May 2026). The US rates Zambia Level 1 (issued 31 Jul 2023). Keep a distance from wildlife and follow guides.

Victoria Falls was added to the UNESCO list in 1989. David Livingstone, the Scottish explorer, was the first European to see the falls, in 1855, and named them after Queen Victoria; the town of Livingstone is named after him. The Livingstone Museum is the largest museum in Zambia. The Victoria Falls Bridge, opened in 1905, crosses the gorge between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Nshima, a maize porridge, is Zambia's staple, served with relish.
