Picasso's city, a gorge-top town & white villages Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

The Costa del Sol is better known for beaches, but just behind it lie a cultured port city and a dramatic mountain town. This route spends three nights in Málaga and three in Ronda. From Seoul you'll connect through a European or Gulf hub to Málaga.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Málaga: day one, the old town and cathedral; day two, Alcazaba and Gibralfaro; day three, Picasso Museum and the port. Then spend days four to six in Ronda: day four, train to Ronda, then Puente Nuevo; day five, white villages; day six, Caminito del Rey.

Málaga is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso; visit the Museo Picasso Málaga to see his work in a palace in the old town. The city also has a branch of the Centre Pompidou, in a coloured glass cube by the port.

Above the centre, walk through the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress with gardens and courtyards, and take the path that climbs further to Gibralfaro Castle, with wide views over the bay and the bullring.

Evenings in Málaga are spent in tapas bars around the cathedral and along the palm-lined waterfront, where locals walk until late.

Then take the train to Ronda, on a cliff split by El Tajo, a gorge more than a hundred metres deep.

Ronda's bullring is one of the oldest in Spain, and paths below the town lead to viewpoints of the bridge from the valley floor.

Drive into the hills around Ronda, dotted with pueblos blancos, white villages on hillsides. Between Málaga and Ronda, the Caminito del Rey is a walkway fixed to the walls of a narrow gorge, reopened to visitors after restoration.

Practical notes: trains link Málaga and Ronda. The Caminito del Rey needs a timed ticket, so book it before you travel. Wear good shoes for Ronda's steep lanes, and keep the hottest hours for a long lunch.

Safety: Canada's advice for Spain is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 13 August 2026), and the US rates Spain Level 2 (1 Aug 2026).
