Blue town & Mediterranean medinas Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Sep–Nov

Northern Morocco looks towards Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, and its towns share a long Andalusian history. This route links Tangier, the blue town of Chefchaouen and the medina of Tetouan. From Seoul you'll connect through Europe or the Gulf.

How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Tangier: day one, the medina and kasbah; day two, Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Then spend days three and four in Chefchaouen: day three, into the Rif to Chefchaouen; day four, medina and a walk to the Spanish Mosque. Then spend day five in Tetouan: Tetouan medina.

Tangier has been a meeting point of cultures for centuries. Its medina climbs up to the kasbah, where the Kasbah Museum is set in the former sultan's palace. West of the city, Cape Spartel marks the meeting of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the Caves of Hercules open towards the sea.

Chefchaouen sits in the Rif mountains, and its medina is washed in shades of blue. The town is relaxed and good for wandering. A walk up to the Spanish Mosque on the hill gives a view over the town at sunset, and trails lead into Talassemtane National Park.

Tetouan, closer to the coast, has a medina that UNESCO lists for its Andalusian character, as it was rebuilt by refugees from Spain. It is less visited than other medinas and has whitewashed houses and busy craft souks.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild weather. Winters can be wet, and summers hot.

Tangier's cafés, some of them historic, are good places to watch life go by over mint tea. In Chefchaouen, the medina's small squares are lined with restaurants serving tagines and local goat cheese. Tetouan's craft souks are quieter, and bargaining is expected.

Good to know: Buses and grands taxis link the three towns. Dress modestly, especially in smaller towns. Friday is the main day of prayer, and some shops close at midday.
