Seoul to the Faroe Islands: Tórshavn and Gjógv
Seoul → Tórshavn → Gjógv
Sea cliffs, puffins & turf roofs Best season (general guide): May–Sep
The Faroe Islands are a group of North Atlantic islands between Iceland and Norway, with steep green cliffs, waterfalls and villages of turf-roofed houses. This route spends three nights in Tórshavn and two in the village of Gjógv. From Seoul you'll connect through Copenhagen.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Tórshavn: day one, arrive via Múlafossur waterfall, then Tórshavn; day two, Tinganes and Kirkjubøur; day three, Mykines puffins (seasonal) or a boat trip. Then spend days four and five in Gjógv: day four, through the subsea tunnel to Gjógv; day five, cliff walk and Eiði viewpoints.
The airport is on Vágar, close to the waterfall of Múlafossur, which drops from a cliff into the sea at Gásadalur. Tórshavn is one of the world's smallest capitals. Its old quarter, Tinganes, has red wooden buildings with turf roofs, and it has been a meeting place for the Faroese parliament for centuries.
Kirkjubøur, south of the capital, has the ruins of a medieval cathedral by the sea. In summer, boat trips go to Mykines, where puffins nest on the cliffs.
Tunnels, some under the sea, link many of the islands. One of them, under the fjord to Eysturoy, has a roundabout deep underground. Gjógv takes its name from a narrow sea gorge that serves as a natural harbour. Walks from the village lead along the cliffs.
May to September is the best time, with long days. The weather can change quickly, and fog is common.
Faroese food is based on fish, lamb and seabirds, and some restaurants serve the traditional dried and fermented dishes. Sheep graze everywhere, even on steep slopes. Villages are small and quiet, with colourful houses and churches.
Good to know: A hire car is the easiest way to get around. Some hiking trails cross private land and charge a fee or require a guide, so check before you go.
Bring waterproof boots and keep well back from cliff edges in strong wind.
