The spice island & a quiet sister Best season (general guide): Jan–May

Grenada is known as the Spice Isle, for its nutmeg and other spices. This route spends four nights on Grenada and two on Carriacou. From Shanghai you'll connect via North America or Europe to Grenada. St. George's, the capital, has a horseshoe harbour with colourful houses on the hills. Grand Anse is a long beach near the capital.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four on Grenada: day one, Grand Anse; day two, St. George's harbour; day three, Grand Etang rainforest; day four, sculpture park snorkel. Then spend days five and six on Carriacou: day five, ferry to Carriacou; day six, Sandy Island.

Grand Etang, in the mountains, is a crater lake in rainforest. The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park has sculptures on the seabed, visited by snorkellers and divers. Carriacou, reached by ferry, is a quiet island. Sandy Island, a small islet nearby, has white sand and reefs. January to May is the dry season.

Good to know: Ferries link Grenada and Carriacou.

Grenada's airport is near Grand Anse, a short drive from most hotels. Minibuses are a cheap way to get around, while taxis and rental cars give more flexibility. A local driving permit is needed to drive. The roads into the mountains are steep and winding, so take care. Spice tours visit plantations and processing stations, showing how nutmeg and cocoa are grown. The ferry to Carriacou takes a couple of hours, and the sea can be rough, so bring motion-sickness remedies if needed. Carriacou has a slower pace, with small guesthouses and few cars. Bring cash, as card payment is not available everywhere.

Grenada's national dish, oil down, is a stew of breadfruit and salt meat. Friday evenings bring a street food fish fry to one of Grenada's villages, where locals gather for grilled fish and music. Ask at your hotel for directions and timing, and bring small bills for food and drinks. Leave a day free on Grenada for a slow beach afternoon before the flight out.

George's for the flight home.

Safety: Canada's advice for Grenada is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Grenada Level 2 (5 Jan 2026).
