Mountain rice terraces & hanging coffins Best season (general guide): Mar–May

In the mountains of northern Luzon, the rice terraces of the Ifugao people climb whole valleys, and nearby Sagada keeps traditions of its own. This route spends three nights in Banaue and three in Sagada. From Singapore you'll fly to Manila, then take a bus north. Banaue is a municipality in Ifugao province with about 20,000 people. It is home to the Batad and Bangaan rice terraces, part of a UNESCO site.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Banaue: day one, overnight bus from Manila; day two, Batad terraces walk; day three, viewpoints and Ifugao villages. Then spend days four to six in Sagada: day four, road to Sagada; day five, hanging coffins and Echo Valley; day six, Sumaguing Cave.

The Hudhud chants of the Ifugao, sung during harvest and funerals, are listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage.

Batad's terraces form a natural amphitheatre and are reached on foot. Sagada, in Mountain Province, has about 10,700 people. It is famous for its hanging coffins, a traditional form of burial still used today. The coffins are placed on cliffs and in caves, and the elderly traditionally carve their own. Sumaguing Cave, with its large chambers and rock formations, is explored with a local guide.

March to May is the driest season in the mountains; the terraces are greenest before the harvest. The terraces were carved by the ancestors of the Ifugao people.

Getting there and around: fly into Manila, go on to Banaue overland, go on to Sagada by road, and return by road to Manila for the flight home.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in the Philippines and to avoid travel to parts of Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago (advisory updated 7 Jul 2026); the US rates the Philippines Level 2, with Level 4 for those areas (1 Sep 2026).
