A river town in the high desert & America's deepest lake Best season (general guide): Jul–Sep

East of the Cascade mountains, Oregon turns dry and sunny, with volcanic landscapes and one of the most remarkable lakes in North America. This route spends three nights in Bend and three near Crater Lake. From Singapore you'll connect through a US hub to Redmond, near Bend.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Bend: day one, the Deschutes river trail; day two, High Desert Museum and Lava Lands; day three, Smith Rock. Then spend days four to six at Crater Lake: day four, road south to Crater Lake; day five, Rim Drive; day six, boat to Wizard Island.

Pioneers knew it as a fordable crossing of the river at a bend, and an 1870s ranch made the name Farewell Bend popular. It was incorporated as a city in 1905 and began as a logging town. Mirror Pond, a reservoir created on the river in 1910, is in the centre of town. The High Desert Museum, south of the city, covers the wildlife and history of the region.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument protects lava flows, a lava tube and an obsidian flow nearby. Smith Rock State Park, to the north, is one of the birthplaces of American sport climbing. Crater Lake National Park, established in 1902, is the fifth-oldest national park in the United States and the only one in Oregon. The lake fills the caldera of Mount Mazama, a volcano that collapsed after a huge eruption around 7,700 years ago.

At 594 metres deep, it is the deepest lake in the United States. Wizard Island, a cinder cone, rises from the lake, and boats run to it in summer. Summer is the only season when all of the rim road is open, because the area gets heavy snow. Bend's Mount Bachelor ski area lies on a volcano west of the city.

Crater Lake is fed almost entirely by rain and snow, with no rivers flowing in or out. Bend has many craft breweries, and an ale trail links them.
