Whale sharks & a fringing reef Best season (general guide): Mar–Jul

On Western Australia's Ningaloo Coast, listed by UNESCO for its reef and desert landscape, the reef lies close to shore, so you can snorkel straight from the beach. This route spends four nights in Exmouth and two in Coral Bay. From Singapore you'll connect via Perth to Learmonth, a short drive from Exmouth.

How to pace it: arrive and settle into Exmouth. Day two is the whale shark swim: whale sharks gather along the reef each year, and licensed tours leave early and last most of the day, with snorkelling in open water, so be comfortable swimming. Give day three to the gorges and beaches of Cape Range National Park, which has campsites but few facilities, so take water and supplies. Keep day four for beach snorkelling, checking conditions first, as currents can be strong off some beaches.

On day five, drive south to Coral Bay, a small town where the reef starts just off the beach, and spend day six snorkelling from the shore. In the warmer months, turtles nest on some beaches and rangers run guided turtle-watching walks; follow the guidelines and use a torch with a red filter after dark. Coral Bay is a short drive south of Exmouth, and sunsets over the Indian Ocean end most days on this coast.

Practical notes: March to July is whale shark season, and humpback whales pass later in the year. A car is essential, as public transport is limited, and distances are long, so drive in daylight to avoid wildlife on the roads and carry extra water. Accommodation in both towns books up in whale shark season, so reserve early.
