Stockholm to South Australia's wine valleys: the Barossa and Clare
Stockholm → Barossa Valley → Clare Valley
Shiraz, Riesling & a cycle trail Best season (general guide): Mar–May
South Australia is known for wine and food. This route spends three nights in the Barossa Valley and three in the Clare Valley. From Stockholm you'll connect via Asia to Adelaide, then drive north. The Barossa Valley is one of Australia's best-known wine regions, known for Shiraz. German settlers shaped the Barossa's towns, such as Tanunda, and their churches and bakeries remain.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in the Barossa Valley: day one, arrive in Adelaide, then drive to the Barossa; day two, winery visits; day three, Tanunda and the valley. Then spend days four to six in the Clare Valley: day four, drive north to Clare; day five, cycle the Riesling Trail; day six, Mintaro and Martindale Hall.
The Clare Valley, further north, is known for Riesling. The Riesling Trail, a former railway line, is a path for walking and cycling between wineries and villages. Mintaro is a small heritage village of stone buildings, and Martindale Hall, a Georgian-style mansion, stands nearby. Autumn, March to May, is harvest season.
Good to know: Book a driver or tour for wineries, or cycle the trail.
Adelaide's airport is close to the city, and rental cars are easy to find there. The Barossa is within an easy drive north, and many wineries offer tastings, some by appointment. A tour or driver avoids the issue of tasting and driving. Clare is a further drive north on quiet country roads. Accommodation in both valleys includes cottages and small hotels. Book ahead during festivals.
Local bakeries sell German-style breads. Kangaroos are often seen at dusk in the Barossa's hills and fields, so drive carefully. On the Riesling Trail, bikes can be hired in Clare and nearby towns, and the path is mostly gentle. Restaurants in the Barossa focus on local produce and wine pairings. Leave time for the drive back to Adelaide airport on the final day.
Pack sunscreen and a hat. In the Clare Valley, many cellar doors are small and family-run, with tastings led by the winemakers themselves on quieter weekdays. Picnic spots along the Riesling Trail make a good lunch stop between villages.
Safety: Canada's advice for Australia is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Australia Level 1 (18 Aug 2026).
