Stockholm to Tasmania: Launceston and Freycinet
Stockholm → Launceston → Freycinet
A river gorge & a granite coast Best season (general guide): Nov–Apr
Tasmania's north and east coast offer a river city and pink granite peaks above white beaches. This route spends three nights in Launceston and three at Freycinet. From Stockholm you'll connect via a hub to Launceston. Cataract Gorge, a few minutes' walk from Launceston's centre, has paths, a chairlift and a swimming basin. The Tamar Valley, north of the city, is a wine region.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Launceston: day one, Cataract Gorge; day two, Tamar Valley wineries; day three, city and markets. Then spend days four to six in Freycinet: day four, drive to Coles Bay; day five, Wineglass Bay lookout; day six, Bay of Fires.
Freycinet National Park, on the east coast, has pink granite peaks called the Hazards. A walk leads to the Wineglass Bay lookout, above a curving white beach. Further north, the Bay of Fires has orange lichen on its boulders. November to April is the warm season.
The Tamar Valley is known for cool-climate wines, especially Pinot Noir and sparkling wine.
Wineglass Bay is often listed among the world's best beaches. The Bay of Fires was named by Captain Tobias Furneaux in 1773 after he saw the fires of Aboriginal people on the beaches. The Tasmanian devil, the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, lives only in Tasmania.
Tasmanian oysters and cheeses are local specialities. Tasmania's east coast is known for oysters farmed in the sheltered bays, and Freycinet's Great Oyster Bay is named after them. Freycinet's Hazards are made of pink granite.
Getting there and around: fly into Launceston, go on to Freycinet by road, and return by road to Launceston for the flight home.
Safety: Canada's advice for Australia is to exercise normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Australia Level 1 (18 Aug 2026).
