Volcano rim & island culture Best season (general guide): May–Oct

Vanuatu is an archipelago in the South Pacific, known for its volcanoes and the strength of its traditional culture, called kastom. This route spends three nights in Port Vila and two on Tanna. From Stockholm you'll connect through Asia and Australia.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Port Vila: day one, the market; day two, Mele Cascades; day three, Chief Roi Mata's Domain. Then spend days four and five in Tanna: day four, fly to Tanna, then Mount Yasur at dusk; day five, village visit.

Port Vila, the capital, is on the island of Efate. Its market sells fruit, vegetables and crafts, and the Mele Cascades nearby are a series of waterfalls and pools.

Chief Roi Mata's Domain, listed by UNESCO, preserves the sites associated with a chief who lived in the early seventeenth century, and it is still important to local people.

A short flight takes you to Tanna, where Mount Yasur is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes. Visitors climb to the crater rim at dusk to see it erupt. Visits depend on the volcano's alert level, so check before you go. Villages on Tanna keep strong kastom traditions, and visits should be arranged with local guides.

May to October is the cooler, drier season and the best time. The cyclone season runs from November to April.

Port Vila's waterfront has restaurants and cafés serving fresh seafood and local produce, and its harbour is a starting point for boat trips. Snorkelling and diving around Efate reveal coral and tropical fish. On Tanna, accommodation is simple, often in bungalows run by local families. Life follows a slower pace, with village markets, gardens and the sound of the volcano in the distance.

Good to know: Domestic flights can change at short notice, so leave room in your plans. Ask before taking photos of people.

Bring a torch and sturdy shoes for the volcano.
