A natural harbour & a shallow bay Best season (general guide): May–Sep

Sri Lanka's east coast has its best weather when the west and south are wet, which makes it a summer alternative. This route spends four nights around Trincomalee and two at Pasikudah. From Stockholm you'll connect via a Gulf hub and Colombo to Trincomalee.

How to pace it: Trincomalee is built on a peninsula between inner and outer harbours, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and for nearly a millennium it has been a main centre of Tamil-speaking culture. On day two, walk through Fort Frederick, where deer wander, to the Hindu Koneswaram temple on the cliff, destroyed by the Portuguese in 1622 and rebuilt in the twentieth century. Day three is for snorkelling at Pigeon Island National Park, named after its rock pigeons, where coral, reef fish and blacktip reef sharks are seen; day four for Nilaveli's long beach. The Kanniya hot springs, seven wells of warm water, and the War Cemetery, which recalls the Japanese air raid of 1942, fit around them. Boats to Pigeon Island leave from Nilaveli, north of the town, and the harbour itself was long used by the British Royal Navy.

On day five, drive south to Pasikudah, a bay whose water stays knee-deep far from shore, ideal for a lazy last day in the water. Pasikudah lies further south along the same coast.

Practical notes: May to September is the dry season on the east coast, and whale watching trips run from Trincomalee in season. Try kottu roti, chopped roti with curry, egg and chillies, a dish that originated in eastern towns such as Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Swim only on guarded beaches and where currents are known to be safe.

Safety: Canada advises a high degree of caution in Sri Lanka (updated 7 Jul 2026), and the US rates Sri Lanka Level 2 (14 Oct 2025).
