Totem poles, rainforest & the edge of the Pacific Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep

Haida Gwaii is an archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, home of the Haida Nation. This route spends six nights on the islands. From Sydney you'll connect via Vancouver to Sandspit. The islands have rainforest, long beaches and a strong living culture. The Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay has totem poles, canoes and a museum.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six in Haida Gwaii: day one, ferry to Graham Island; day two, Haida Heritage Centre; day three, travel north to Masset; day four, beaches and forest; day five, Gwaii Haanas boat day; day six, rest day.

Gwaii Haanas, in the south, protects islands and Haida village sites. SGang Gwaay, an old village with standing totem poles, is listed by UNESCO. Masset, in the north, is near beaches and forest trails. Gwaii Haanas is reached only by boat or floatplane, with guided tours in summer. June to September is the best time.

Good to know: Visitors to Gwaii Haanas must attend an orientation, and trips are weather-dependent. A car is useful on Graham Island.

Sandspit's airport is on Moresby Island, and a short ferry links it with Graham Island, where most visitors stay. A car is useful for exploring, and rentals should be booked ahead, as supply is limited. Accommodation is mostly in small lodges and guesthouses. The weather is often cool and wet, even in summer, so bring waterproof layers and warm clothes. Gwaii Haanas trips are run by licensed operators and need advance booking. Mobile coverage is limited outside the main towns. Local food includes fresh seafood, and some restaurants serve Haida dishes. Plan for slower days; the islands reward unhurried exploration.

Respect Haida protocols when visiting village sites. Visiting a local carver's studio or attending a community event, when invited, gives insight into Haida art and culture. Ask at the heritage centre about events during your stay, and always ask permission before photographing people or ceremonies. Pack binoculars for whales and eagles along the shore. The archipelago, previously known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, has about 400 smaller islands around its two main ones and lies 55 to 125 kilometres off the coast.
