Japan's finest original castle & a harbour city of beef and sake Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Oct–Nov

West of Osaka, Kansai's coast holds Japan's most celebrated castle and one of its most international cities. This route spends three nights in Himeji and three in Kobe. From Sydney you'll fly to Osaka's Kansai airport, then take the train west. Himeji Castle is often called the White Heron Castle because of its white walls and the shape of its roofs.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Himeji: day one, train from Osaka; day two, Himeji Castle and Kōko-en; day three, Mount Shosha temples. Then spend days four to six in Kobe: day four, train to Kobe, then the harbour; day five, Kitano and the sake breweries; day six, Arima Onsen.

Himeji Castle is one of the few Japanese castles whose main keep survives from the early seventeenth century, and in 1993 it was one of the first sites in Japan added to the UNESCO list. Next to the castle, Kōko-en is a group of nine walled Japanese gardens built on the site of old samurai houses.

On Mount Shosha, north of the city, the temple complex of Engyō-ji is reached by ropeway and was used as a film location for The Last Samurai. Kobe is the capital of Hyōgo Prefecture and Japan's seventh-largest city, on the north shore of Osaka Bay, with the Rokko mountains rising behind it.

The city was badly damaged by the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995, and a memorial park on the harbour keeps a damaged section of the quay. The Kitano area has Western-style houses built by foreign merchants, several of them open as museums. Kobe beef comes from Tajima cattle raised in Hyōgo Prefecture under strict rules.

The Nada district is one of Japan's main sake-brewing areas, and several breweries have museums. Arima Onsen, behind the mountains, is one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns. Spring and autumn are mild and clear, while summer is hot and humid. Fast trains on the Sanyō line link Himeji, Kobe and Osaka.
