Canaries whales & volcanoes Best season (general guide): Year-round

The Canary Islands lie off north-west Africa, and the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera is known as a place to see whales and dolphins all year. This route pairs Tenerife's volcano with the quiet green island next door. From Sydney it's a long trip via Asia or the Gulf and a European hub. A ferry links the islands.

How to pace it: After you arrive from Sydney, keep day one on Tenerife for settling in. Then use day two for Teide National Park, day three for a whale-watching boat, and day four for La Laguna or Los Gigantes. La Gomera takes days five to seven: take the ferry over on day five, walk in the Garajonay forest on day six, and visit the ravine villages on day seven.

On Tenerife, the Teide National Park is the main attraction: a high volcanic landscape of lava fields and craters, with a cable car towards the summit of Spain's highest peak. Boats from the south-west coast go out to see the pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins that live in the channel year-round. The cliffs of Los Gigantes and the old town of La Laguna are also worth visiting. La Gomera is a slower, greener island. Garajonay National Park protects ancient laurel forest, often wrapped in mist, and hiking trails drop into ravines with palm groves and terraced villages. The island is also known for silbo, a whistled language.

The subtropical climate makes the islands suitable for visiting at any time of year. Sea conditions are usually calmest in late spring and autumn, while winter swells can sometimes cancel boat trips.

The final path to Teide's summit crater needs a permit booked in advance through the official system, separate from the cable car ticket. Choose whale-watching operators that follow responsible-watching rules for this Whale Heritage Site.

Tenerife's north and south are very different. The south is sunny and built-up around beach resorts, while the north is greener, with towns such as La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz and the old university town of La Laguna, a UNESCO site. Staying a night in the north gives a more local feel.
