Tel Aviv to Colorado: Denver, Boulder and Rocky Mountain National Park
Tel Aviv → Denver → Boulder → Estes Park
Mountain city & alpine tundra Best season (general guide): Jun–Sep
Colorado's Front Range rises straight out of the plains, with a lively capital, a university town and high mountains. This route spends six nights between Denver, Boulder and Estes Park. From Tel Aviv you'll connect via a European or US hub to Denver.
How to pace it: Spend days one and two in Denver: day one, arrive and settle in; day two, Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Then spend day three in Boulder: boulder and the Flatirons. Then spend days four to six in Estes Park: day four, into the park, then Bear Lake; day five, Trail Ridge Road; day six, hike and wildlife.
Denver is called the Mile High City for its altitude. Red Rocks Amphitheatre, in the hills west of the city, is a concert venue set between huge sandstone rocks.
Boulder lies below the Flatirons, slanted rock slabs on the foothills, with trails starting from the edge of town.
Rocky Mountain National Park protects high peaks, lakes and alpine tundra. Trail Ridge Road crosses the park above the treeline, and Bear Lake is a starting point for many hikes.
Estes Park, the gateway town, is where elk are often seen.
June to September is the best season, when Trail Ridge Road is open.
Good to know: The altitude can make you tired, so drink water and start slowly. Check the National Park Service page for any entry rules before you go.
Denver's centre has museums, breweries and Union Station, a restored railway hall with shops and restaurants. Red Rocks is open to walkers when no concert is on, and the views east over the plains are wide. In Boulder, Chautauqua Park is the starting point for trails up the Flatirons. Pearl Street is a pedestrian street of shops and cafés. In Rocky Mountain National Park, drive Trail Ridge Road early, when wildlife is most active and parking is easier. Keep a safe distance from elk, especially in autumn. Bring warm clothes, as the alpine tundra is cold and windy even in July. Lightning is a real danger above the treeline, so turn back if storms build.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, so start hikes early.
