An interwar capital & a sand-dune spit on the Baltic Best season (general guide): Jun–Aug

Lithuania is small, but between its second city and its Baltic coast lie very different worlds. This route spends three nights in Kaunas and three on the Curonian Spit. From Tel Aviv you'll fly to Kaunas airport, or to Vilnius and take the train.

How to pace it: arrive and walk the old town to Kaunas Castle, one of the oldest stone castles in the country, where the Neris meets the Nemunas. On day two, take a modernist walk: between 1920 and 1939, when Vilnius was part of Poland, Kaunas was the temporary capital, and its offices, churches and homes from that time were listed by UNESCO in 2023. Give day three to the Ninth Fort, a nineteenth-century fortress that is now a museum and memorial to those killed there in the Second World War, and the Sugihara House, the former consulate where the Japanese vice-consul Chiune Sugihara issued transit visas in 1940 that let thousands of Jewish refugees escape.

On day four, take the bus to Klaipėda, the main seaport, and the short ferry to the Curonian Spit, a curved strip of dunes about 98 kilometres long between the lagoon and the Baltic, listed by UNESCO and shared with Russia's Kaliningrad region. Base yourself in Nida, with its fishermen's cottages and Thomas Mann's summer house, and on day five climb the Parnidis Dune, one of the highest moving dunes in Europe. On day six, walk the Hill of Witches at Juodkrantė, a forest trail lined with carved folklore figures.

Practical notes: summer is short and the best time for the beaches. The spit's southern half is in Russia, so stay on the Lithuanian side.

Safety: Canada asks travellers to Lithuania to take normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Lithuania Level 1 (28 Apr 2026).
