Maldives reefs & manta rays Best season (general guide): Dec–Apr (most settled Jan–Mar)

Staying on a local island in the Maldives is a way to see the reefs without staying at a private resort. This route spends a night near Malé and then takes a boat to Maafushi, a local island with guesthouses. From Tokyo you'll connect via Asia or the Gulf.

Malé is small but busy, with the Old Friday Mosque built from coral stone and a lively fish market. Ferries and speedboats then go to Maafushi in South Malé Atoll. Excursions from the island include snorkelling trips to reefs with turtles and rays, dives at channel sites, and visits to sandbanks. In the right season, boats go to cleaning stations where manta rays gather. Maafushi has a designated beach for swimwear, while the rest of the island follows local customs.

The Maldives Meteorological Service describes the north-east monsoon from about January to March as the most settled period, with December and April as transition months. The rest of the year is wetter and windier.

Respect local customs on inhabited islands: alcohol is not served, and modest clothing is expected outside the tourist beach. Check the boat schedules before booking your flights.

How to pace it: if your flight from Tokyo arrives late, stay a night near the airport or in Malé, as ferries do not run at night. On Maafushi, plan a couple of snorkelling or diving trips and a day trip to a sandbank, and keep a day free in case the weather changes. Speedboats to the island take less than an hour, and public ferries are slower and cheaper, but have fewer departures, so check the timetable. Leave enough time to return to the airport before your flight home, as boats can be delayed by the sea.
