A hilltop university & a lagoon of painted boats Best season (general guide): Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct

Between Lisbon and Porto, central Portugal is often skipped, yet it holds one of Europe's oldest universities and a lagoon town laced with canals. This route spends three nights in Coimbra and three in Aveiro. From Toronto you'll fly to Porto, then take the train south. Coimbra's university, founded in 1290 and moved here for good in the sixteenth century, crowns the hill above the Mondego river. UNESCO lists the university's Alta and Sofia areas.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Coimbra: day one, train from Porto; day two, university and the Joanina Library; day three, old town and Coimbra fado. Then spend days four to six in Aveiro: day four, train to Aveiro, then the canals; day five, moliceiro boat and the salt flats; day six, Costa Nova beach.

The university's baroque Joanina Library, lined with gilded shelves, is the most famous room, and visits are by timed ticket. Coimbra has its own style of fado, traditionally sung by men in student capes, often performed in small venues in the old town in the evening. Aveiro, on a coastal lagoon to the north-west, is crossed by canals where colourful moliceiro boats, once used to gather seaweed, now carry visitors.

Ovos moles, sweet egg-yolk filling in wafer shells, are the town's speciality. Nearby Costa Nova is known for its houses painted in bold stripes. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant months. The University of Coimbra was added to the UNESCO list in 2013. Its Joanina Library is home to a colony of small bats that eat insects which would otherwise damage the old books.

Coimbra was Portugal's capital in the Middle Ages, before the court moved to Lisbon, and the first kings of Portugal are buried in its Monastery of Santa Cruz. Aveiro is sometimes called the Venice of Portugal because of its canals, and its lagoon, the Ria de Aveiro, is lined with salt pans. Leitão, roast suckling pig from the Bairrada wine region between the two towns, is a regional dish worth seeking out.

Safety: Canada's advice for Portugal is to exercise normal security precautions (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Portugal Level 1 (23 Dec 2025).
