Colourful Willemstad & shore diving Best season (general guide): Year-round (driest Feb–Sep)

Curaçao and Bonaire are Dutch Caribbean islands off Venezuela, outside the main hurricane belt. This route spends three nights on each. From Toronto you'll fly to Curaçao, then take a short flight to Bonaire. Willemstad's historic area, with colourful Dutch-style buildings on the harbour, is listed by UNESCO. The Queen Emma Bridge, a floating pontoon bridge, links Punda and Otrobanda.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three on Curaçao: day one, Willemstad; day two, Punda and Otrobanda; day three, beaches west. Then spend days four to six on Bonaire: day four, fly to Bonaire; day five, shore dive or snorkel; day six, Washington Slagbaai park.

Curaçao's west coast has small beaches in coves. Bonaire is known for diving. The Bonaire National Marine Park protects reefs around the island, many reached from shore. Washington Slagbaai National Park, in the north, has cacti, lagoons and flamingos. The islands are dry and sunny most of the year.

Good to know: A car or pickup is useful on Bonaire for shore diving. Divers pay a nature fee.

Curaçao's capital is easy to explore on foot, with colourful buildings on both sides of the harbour. A car is useful for reaching the beaches on the west of the island. The short flight to Bonaire is the easiest way to travel between the islands. On Bonaire, many dive shops rent gear and tanks, and many shore dive sites lie along the coast road. Snorkellers can also reach the reef from the beach in many places. Don't leave valuables in parked cars at dive sites. The sun is strong all year, so bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. Both islands use local currencies, but US dollars are widely accepted.

Lac Bay, on Bonaire, is a calm lagoon with mangroves. Evenings in Willemstad are lively, with restaurants and bars on the waterfront. On Bonaire, quiet nights and starry skies are part of the island's appeal, and sunset is a good time to sit by the water and watch the light change over the sea.

Safety: Canada's advice for Curaçao is to take normal security precautions (updated 26 May 2026), and the US rates Curaçao Level 1 (9 Sep 2026).
