Toronto to Portugal's Alentejo: Évora, Monsaraz and the coast
Toronto → Évora → Monsaraz → Vila Nova de Milfontes
Roman temple, cork plains & hilltop villages Best season (general guide): Mar–Jun, Sep–Oct
The Alentejo, between Lisbon and the Algarve, is Portugal's quiet heart: rolling plains of cork oaks and olive trees, whitewashed villages and a wild coast. This route spends six nights between Évora, Monsaraz and Vila Nova de Milfontes. From Toronto you'll fly to Lisbon, then drive east. Évora's historic centre, listed by UNESCO, sits inside old walls. Its Roman temple, with granite columns, stands at the top of the town beside the cathedral.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Évora: day one, drive from Lisbon to Évora; day two, Roman temple and cathedral; day three, Almendres stone circle. Then spend day four in Monsaraz: Monsaraz and the Alqueva. Then spend days five and six in Vila Nova de Milfontes: day five, travel west to the coast; day six, walk part of the Rota Vicentina.
The Chapel of Bones, in the Church of St Francis, has walls lined with human bones and skulls, a reminder of mortality from the sixteenth century. Outside the town, the Cromlech of the Almendres is a group of standing stones older than Stonehenge, set among cork oaks. Monsaraz is a tiny walled village on a hill near the Spanish border. Below it spreads the Alqueva reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in Western Europe.
Cork is harvested by hand from the bark of the trees here, every several years, without cutting them down. On the coast, Vila Nova de Milfontes sits where a river meets the Atlantic. The Rota Vicentina, a network of walking trails, follows the cliffs south from here. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Summer inland is extremely hot.
Évora's old centre is compact, so leave the car outside the walls and explore on foot. Out in the plains, distances between villages are short, but lunch runs late and many places close in the afternoon, so plan drives around meal times rather than the other way round.
Good to know: A car is needed to move between the stops. Alentejo food is hearty, with pork, bread soups and local wine. Book coastal rooms ahead in summer.
Safety: Canada's advice for Portugal is to take normal security precautions (updated 11 August 2026), and the US rates Portugal Level 1 (23 Dec 2025).
