Surf island & hidden lagoons Best season (general guide): Mar–Oct

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the south-east Philippines, known for surfing, coconut palms and a laid-back pace. This route spends all six nights on Siargao itself. From Toronto you'll connect through Manila or Cebu. Cloud 9, a reef break near General Luna, made the island famous among surfers. There are gentler waves for beginners, and surf schools are common.

How to pace it: Spend days one to six on Siargao: day one, General Luna; day two, cloud 9 surf; day three, island hopping; day four, Magpupungko rock pools; day five, Sugba Lagoon; day six, coconut roads by scooter.

Island-hopping trips visit Naked, Daku and Guyam islands, small sandbars and palm islands near the coast. At Magpupungko, tide pools form in the rocks at low tide, good for swimming. Sugba Lagoon, off Siargao's west coast on Kawhagan island, is a clear green lagoon among mangroves. March to October is usually the best time; check the season for typhoons.

Siargao is best enjoyed at a slow pace, with surf in the morning and island trips in the afternoon. Pack light, quick-drying clothes, reef shoes and sunscreen. Island boat trips depend on sea conditions, so keep a spare day. In General Luna, cafés and small restaurants line the main road, and many rent boards. Arrange trips through registered operators.

Good to know: Scooters are common, but drive carefully.

Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution in the Philippines and avoiding non-essential travel to Surigao del Norte, excluding Siargao Island (updated 7 Jul 2026). The US rates the Philippines Level 2 and excludes Siargao Island from its Level 3 'reconsider travel' area of Mindanao (issued 1 Sep 2026). This route stays on Siargao: fly in and out rather than travelling overland through Mindanao, and don't take boat trips to Bucas Grande or other parts of Surigao del Norte that aren't covered by the exclusion.

Evenings on the island are relaxed, with sunsets over the water and simple food from local stalls. Respect village communities by following guides' instructions and keeping noise down in the lagoons. Carry cash for boat fees.
