Malta diving & history Best season (general guide): May–Oct (diving best Jun–Oct)

Malta packs thousands of years of history into a tiny archipelago in the middle of the Mediterranean, from prehistoric temples to the fortifications of the Knights of St John. From Toronto you'll connect in Europe to Malta International Airport. This route spends half the stay in Valletta and the rest on Gozo, linked by a ferry crossing.

Valletta is a UNESCO-listed city built by the Knights after the Great Siege of 1565. St John's Co-Cathedral, the Upper Barrakka Gardens overlooking the Grand Harbour and the boats across to the Three Cities are highlights. From Valletta you can visit the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground prehistoric burial site with strictly limited daily entry. On Gozo, the pace slows. The Ġgantija temples, part of the UNESCO-listed Megalithic Temples of Malta, are among the oldest free-standing structures in the world, and the Citadel in Victoria looks out across the whole island. Divers come for the clear water, walls and wrecks around the coast.

The warmest, most settled sea is from about June to September, while October and November stay warm and are quieter. Diving is possible all year, as the water never gets very cold, but winter storms can interrupt boat trips. Spring is pleasant for walking, though April can be windy.

Book Hypogeum tickets well in advance; they often sell out weeks ahead. Driving is on the left. Bring good shoes for Valletta's steps and Gozo's rocky coast paths.

Pacing note: on Gozo, a hire car or bus makes it easier to combine the temples and the coast.
