Toronto to Thuringia: Weimar and Erfurt
Toronto → Weimar → Erfurt
Goethe's town & a medieval bridge lined with houses Best season (general guide): May–Sep
Thuringia, in the centre of Germany, packs a great deal of German history into two neighbouring cities. This route spends three nights in Weimar and three in Erfurt. Weimar lies between Erfurt and Jena. It is known for its cultural heritage and its place in German history, and UNESCO lists its classical buildings as well as its Bauhaus sites.
How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Weimar: day one, arrive and settle in; day two, Goethe's house; day three, Bauhaus museum. Then spend days four to six in Erfurt: day four, train to Erfurt, then the Krämerbrücke; day five, cathedral hill; day six, Old Synagogue.
Goethe lived for much of his life in a large house on the Frauenplan, now a museum. Erfurt, a short train ride west, is the capital and largest city of Thuringia, lying in the valley of the River Gera. Its Krämerbrücke is a medieval bridge lined on both sides with inhabited houses, one of the longest of its kind in Europe.
Erfurt Cathedral and the Church of St Severus stand side by side on a hill above the main square. The city's medieval Jewish heritage, including the Old Synagogue, was added to the UNESCO list in 2023.
Weimar gave its name to the Weimar Republic, whose constitution was drawn up in the city in 1919. Friedrich Schiller also lived in Weimar, and a statue of him and Goethe stands in front of the national theatre.
Martin Luther also lived as a monk in Erfurt's Augustinian monastery. Thuringia is known for its grilled bratwurst, which has protected geographical status.
Practical notes: From Toronto you'll connect through a hub to Erfurt or a larger German airport, and trains run on to Weimar. May to September is the best season for the outdoor cafés.
Safety: Canada's advice for Germany is to exercise a high degree of caution (updated 11 Aug 2026), and the US rates Germany Level 2 (13 May 2025).
