Lagoon & Kanak culture Best season (general guide): Sep–Dec

New Caledonia is a French territory in the South Pacific, with one of the largest lagoons in the world, listed by UNESCO, and a rich Kanak culture. This route spends three nights in Nouméa and three on the Isle of Pines. From Vancouver you'll connect through Asia or Australia.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Nouméa: day one, Anse Vata; day two, Tjibaou Cultural Centre; day three, lagoon islet day trip. Then spend days four to six on the Isle of Pines: day four, fly to the Isle of Pines; day five, walk among the columnar pines; day six, penal-colony ruins.

Nouméa mixes French cafés and Pacific life. Anse Vata, the main beach, has a promenade. The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, designed by Renzo Piano, is dedicated to Kanak culture, and its tall structures echo traditional houses.

Boat trips from Nouméa go to small islets in the lagoon for snorkelling.

The Isle of Pines, a short flight south, is known for its tall columnar pines.

September to December is warm and usually dry, while the cyclone season runs from December to March.

Nouméa's markets sell tropical fruit, fish and French bread, and its restaurants mix French and Pacific flavours. The Isle of Pines is quiet, with few cars and a relaxed atmosphere. Accommodation is limited, so book ahead. Captain James Cook sighted the island in 1774 and named it after its tall native pines, Araucaria columnaris.

Safety note: Canada advises a high degree of caution in New Caledonia because of heightened political tensions (updated 8 Sep 2026).

French is the main language, so a few phrases help. Many shops close at midday and on Sunday afternoons, and Isle of Pines tours are best arranged through your accommodation. In 1872 the island became a French penal colony for deportees from the Paris Commune, and ruins of that era remain.

Check flight times to the island, which are limited.
