Colonial university city & hill country Best season (general guide): Mar–May, Sep–Nov

Córdoba, Argentina's second city, has a colonial heart built by the Jesuits and hill country around it. This route spends four nights in Córdoba and two in Alta Gracia. From Warsaw you'll connect through Madrid or São Paulo.

How to pace it: Spend days one to four in Córdoba, Argentina: day one, the Jesuit Block; day two, cathedral and plazas; day three, Quebrada del Condorito; day four, estancia day trip. Then spend days five and six in Alta Gracia: day five, Alta Gracia estancia; day six, Che Guevara's childhood home.

The Jesuit Block in Córdoba, listed by UNESCO with the order's estancias in the province, includes a church, a college and the old university.

The National University of Córdoba is one of the oldest in the Americas.

Quebrada del Condorito National Park protects a canyon where condors soar.

Che Guevara spent his childhood in Alta Gracia, and his former home is a museum.

Autumn and spring are the most pleasant seasons.

Good to know: Buses link the towns. Fernet with cola is the local drink.

Córdoba is a student city with lively bars and music, especially around the Güemes district. The Jesuit Block can be visited with guided tours that explain its history. Empanadas and grilled meats are found everywhere. The hills around the city, the Sierras de Córdoba, have walking trails, rivers and small towns. Quebrada del Condorito National Park is best visited on a clear day, when condors use the warm air to rise. Alta Gracia has a lake and a quiet centre around the Jesuit estancia. Other estancias are spread across the province, and a car helps to visit more than one. Pack a hat and sunscreen for the hill walks. Siesta time is real, and many shops close in the afternoon.

Dinner is late in Argentina, often after nine.

Plan your estancia visits around opening days, as some close early in the week. Córdoba's evening paseo along the pedestrian streets is a pleasant way to see local life before a late dinner.
