Southern Taiwan is warmer and slower than the north. This route spends three nights in Kaohsiung and three in Kenting. From Warsaw you'll connect through Asia or the Gulf to Kaohsiung. Kaohsiung is Taiwan's main port. At Lotus Pond, the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas are entered through the mouths of a dragon and a tiger.

How to pace it: Spend days one to three in Kaohsiung: day one, Lotus Pond pagodas; day two, pier-2 and Cijin island; day three, Fo Guang Shan. Then spend days four to six in Kenting: day four, bus to Kenting; day five, Eluanbi Lighthouse; day six, Liuqiu island day.

Pier-2 Art Center fills old harbour warehouses with galleries and street art. A short ferry crosses to Cijin island, with seafood and a beach. East of the city, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum has a huge seated Buddha and pagodas. Kenting National Park covers Taiwan's southern tip, with beaches, coral and forest. The Eluanbi Lighthouse stands at the cape.

Liuqiu, a small coral island off the coast, is known for sea turtles seen while snorkelling. October to April is the drier season.

Good to know: The MRT covers Kaohsiung, and buses link Kenting. Scooters are popular, but drive carefully.

Kaohsiung has a metro and light rail, so the city's waterfront and markets are easy to reach without a car. Buses run south to Kenting, but a scooter or car gives more freedom once you are there. The sun is strong on the southern tip, so bring hats and reef-safe sunscreen. Night markets are a highlight in both places, with stalls serving seafood, fruit and grilled snacks. Typhoons can affect travel in summer and early autumn, so keep plans flexible and watch the forecasts.

Night markets in both places offer local snacks. In Kaohsiung, the harbour-side art district is a relaxed place for an evening walk. In Kenting, rise early for quiet beaches before the day-trippers arrive from the city. Carry an umbrella for sudden showers.
